There are a lot of dispute regarding which female idol got the best voice in KPop scene. Most of people out there criticized IU. I don’t think it is right to put the blame on IU since she doesn’t explicitly claim that she has a better voice than Taeyeon. Well, it’s up to people who judge them. SNSD fan would absolutely go for Taeyeon even though at the start of their comment sounds like “I’m also a fan of IU, but..” or “I love IU, but..”. And fans of IU would definitely claim IU has the best voice out there. Bias is all around though they tried hard not to sound bias.
As for me, for sure people would think that I am bias to IU. Yup, I love her look and cuteness (considering I was a fan of Morning Musume whose previously looking for “kawaii~” and now seek for “aegyo~”. Honestly, when I hear Taeyeon picking up her top pitch, it was never satisfying. Like lack of climax. Yup, she got the great voice there, but sounds like a note missing from the range. Differently for IU, it’s a great pleasure and satisfaction when she’s hitting the top pitch. It’s like “here it comes…” and “yay, she made it!!!” kind of feeling. That is the first thought after listening to IU’s Good Day.
Most of the critics is regarding IU’s shaky voice. Well, for me it does sound sexy and naive at the same time. It’s her voice personality. Whatever it is, she’s always cute and adorable. Enjoy the clips from these two nominee of best vocal!
Do you get what i mean?
And here is what i mean by ‘climax’
Just had a goosebumps,didn’t you?
both have different range, and different style.
it would be interesting to see both of them singing a same song.
i think what IU is doing is call octave leap or something.
Overall, its really hard to compare to these two singers. It will mostly depend on preference of Voice. HOWEVER, for a fact Taeyeon’s songs are more difficult to sing. She has a powerful voice and have to constantly change her Keys from High to Low WHILE maintaining a strong Voice. She performed twinkle for promotions for a LONG time, and many people was amazed by how she can keep doing High Notes without fail. In the first life performance of Twinkle .. people said how Taeyeon’s parts were really similar to the Audio .. but it wasn’t lip-syncing. To do high notes like her every time requires incredible strength in her Vocals. But I’m not saying I.U songs are any easier. Her Octave Leap is just “WOW”. So don’t compare, just listen to both of the Singers songs and see which one you prefer !
Taeyeon is a better technical singer, she has better control and is more versatile. All this can be expected because Taeyeon had much better training under SM, while IU had less than 2 years under a small label.
IU is a better performer. After Hyuna, she’s probably the most charismatic idol performer for women. Note that Hyuna isn’t the best dancer either, but she has star presence and great interpretation of the music.
I’ve heard IU sing stuff like Better With Time and sound a bit out of her element. Taeyeon can sing anything and sound perfect.
Of course SM stans and the paid SM cadre on the internet work overtime to bash IU compared to Taeyeon but I think as an overall artist IU is better. Taeyeon really isn’t the most striking member of her own group.
well not much to say.. but to make a fair competition, taeyeon’s clip is taken at january while iu’s at december… you know what i mean right? 1 year gap seems not fair.. i bet TY has been trained for better performance in a year… for instance lets see her RDR intro on last japanese tour.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aWOjbiYt2g for better comparison… 🙂
in my personal opinion both are great singers and having each unique voices. While TY have charismatic powerful voice, IU was talented with charming and soothing voice.
Then should we compare the year debut ; 2007(taeyeon) vs 2008(iu)? or maybe further to their year born ;1989(taeyeon) vs 1993(iu)?
no offense, just that, if you really wanna precise with the year of the clip, then lets be totally precise, from the year of their debut.
both are great, which has surpassed most of the other singer.
I’ve been a SONE for 2 years and I just started to know IU last year (If only I knew her earlier)
But I’m not gonna lie
IU’s voice never disappoints me
Taeyeon is really one of the best singers in kpop, so I don’t mean to bash her or anything !
But the thing is, sometimes Taeyeon doesn’t reach her high notes (lack of power and sometimes ‘a bit’ off, I could feel it cos of my perfect pitch(not trying to brag here) but IU’s pitch is really precise and she sings well in every performance !
I dunno if it’s because of the mic prob or because of the dance moves but sometimes even when Taeyeon is not moving she still doesn’t hit the note, for eg. in the last part of Run Devil Run “You better…run run run!” The “run run run” bit sounds out of breath most of the time (in Seoul Music Awards, in Golden Disk Award, etc). In fact, Seohyun’s voice is improving rapidly !!!
IU sings with passion (so is Taeyeon) but IU is the one that can make me cry (I’m not lying it’s true)
okay it’s only my opinion…
But lately, her(IU) voice sounds a bit unstable, especially in low range. Her releasing a ballad song while at the peak of her popularity in pop song really a downer. It seems like she’s ditching the momentum she got on ‘Good Day’. We wont expect another high-pitch song, but at least it is fun and cute, matching her fan image of her. I wish that she’ll release a new song soon. I would blame her management agency for lack of market and audience research in song selection. In ‘Immortal Song 2’, where she failed to impress audience, it was clearly because of lack of commitment by her management agency. “You can only get instrument support if you win 1st place” (was mention by her agency) and in the end she could only perform with her guitar in simple music. On the other hand, Hyorin(SISTAR) got a great music arrangement, backup dancer, great preparation etc, etc. and able to fully commit to her performance. Though it is absurd, that is the reason I dont really like Hyorin.
Seohyun got a really nice voice, but having least attention. I dunno if anyone watch her episodes in WGM, but her voice is really sweet when singing (when she prepare a small event at the lake-side singing CNBLUE’s lovelight and when singing Banmal Song)
Taeyeon has a Strong Vocal Type, but IU has a High Pitched Vocal Type~
That’s it.
hey hey hey
watch it! i’m a sone too okay!
like – so what if taeyeon’s voice couldn’t reach high notes?
of course she can’t! like duhh..!
can’t you like open your eyes wider? or maybe try picking your ear wax or something?
hey hey hey
the snsd’s song that taeyeon sang didn’t have that much of high note (it wasn’t a high note actually!)
even though i’m like 9 years old, i can even see the differences!
and iu sang her song, that at that time needs to have like totally high note!
so don’t just say like you can’t see enough of taeyeon’s capabilities..
she can’t do this, iu can do that!
bla bla bla…
they’re both talented. and i love them both!
from a loving iloveyou & sone
Never mind.
Yay, IU swept The Boys away!!!
what are you? i mean who are you? you’re tearing them both down! of course Last Fantasy’s really great~~ all to all, still it’s just the same concept as Good Day-only the genres and how’s the story line’s different. i mean i don’t wanna make fuss around here, do you?
They both work hard on it. We’ve seen significant growth of IU in several month, and we’ve seen how SNSD was able to market themselves worldwide. I’m just overwhelm by the fact that the idol I’ve adored too much has been finally recognized by people.
The only thing we all can agree now is that, both of them is better than average of other teen idol. Am I right?
IU and taeyeon have approx. the same vocal range in terms of singing in full voice(belt). After that, in boring classical terms(for non classical singing) IU is probably a light lyric mezzo-soprano and Taeyeon is a full lyric Mezzo-soprano. That means they have different tone quality(light vs. dark). But according to voice control I’d say Taeyeon has it over IU. (HUGE FAN OF BOTH). Taeyeon can produce a wider variety of sound 🙂
